Islamic Teachings on Wealth Growth and Its Role

Islam is a dynamic and vibrant faith that possesses timeless liveliness and relevance. It transcends time and place, catering to every stage of life and every era of history, providing a source of guidance.

As Muslims, we are fortunate to have Shariah as a guiding light, illuminating the path to not only enjoying a fulfilling life but also excelling, while remaining true to our core principles.

Allah (SWT) has appointed humans as caliphs on this earth to worship Him and build this earth - the perfectly tailored earth He created for them.

“He is the One Who created everything in the earth for you.” (2:29)

In Islam, building the earth encompasses the moral and material dimensions of building and developing. Morally, it calls for justice, security, and peace. Materially, it embraces agriculture, industry, trade, and more. The realization of material progress hinges on the growth and purposeful utilization of wealth, as well as the relentless advancement of the economy.

Wealth in Islam

The Quran and the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) encourage the growth of wealth and emphasize its role in building a strong and sustainable society. However, it's crucial to understand that wealth in Islam is not an end in itself but rather a means to an end: building a better world.

Wealth in Islam is a tool to build a just society where everyone's needs are met, not hoarded. It's a trust from Allah (SWT), and like responsible stewards, we use it wisely to benefit ourselves, our families, and society. Islam teachings advise us not to keep wealth and worldly life in our hearts but rather in our hands. We are not to be consumed by possessions, and we are to recognize that true mastery lies in our ability to control wealth rather than being controlled by it.

Faith Over Wealth

“by men1 who are not distracted—either by buying or selling—from Allah’s remembrance, or performing prayer, or paying alms-tax. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will tremble, ˹hoping˺ that Allah may reward them according to the best of their deeds and increase them out of His grace. And Allah provides for whoever He wills without limit.” (24:37-38)

While Islam encourages diligence and ambition, it reminds us to prioritize obedience to Allah and remain focused on the remembrance of Him, unaffected by worldly distractions. The pursuit of wealth should never overshadow our obedience to the Creator, for we understand that true and lasting treasures reside with Him, far exceeding any earthly possessions.
